Britton Sets Another Assists Record With 7 Vs. LMU

Nineteenth-ranked CBU's final shot at the upset was just off the mark in the final 10 seconds, as No. 13 Loyola Marymount escaped the Lancer Aquatics Center with a one-goal 16-15 Western Water Polo Association win on Thursday.
After trailing by as many as five, California Baptist battled back to tie the game five times in the second half. The Lancers needed to tie it one more time, though, down 16-15 with 30 seconds to play.
CBU called timeout and drew up a play that got a look at goal, but the shot was off the post and out of bounds, which allowed LMU to run out the clock. The Lions improve to 11-9, 4-1 in the in the WWPA. The Lancers move to 12-14, 2-3, and continue WWPA play on Saturday, with a game at Air Force on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Loyola Marymount is a storied program in the middle of one its best seasons in recent memory. The lions have won eight WWPA championships since 2001, and own six top-20 wins this year.
Britton set up goal after for goal to total a new Lancer single-game record with seven assists on the night. He also set the program record for consecutive games with an assist earlier this year, and currently ranks fifth with 51 assists in his career.
CBU's leading point and goal scorer Joseph Galgani kept his hot streak alive, with a goal, an assist and two steals against the Lions. He now has 20-straight games with a point, has had a goal and an assist in the last 10 games and extended on his scoring streak to 11 contests.
PJ McDonough and Logan Mena each scored a team-high four goals for CBU, with all four of McDonough's coming in the second half. Zach Lowery also had two goals, an assist and a steal. Left-handers Riley Bumgardner and Thomas de Wit each had a goal and an assist for CBU.

The Lancers trailed LMU by as many as five, 8-3, with 2:35 left in the first half. CBU began slowly chipping away at the deficit and used a 4-1 run to first tie the game at 10-10 with 38 seconds left in the third quarter.

McDonough and Galgani both scored twice in the third quarter, which included goals from Mena, de Wit and Bumgardner. CBU tied the game four more times in the fourth quarter on two more goals from McDonough and one each from Mena and Lowery.
Gabe Thorne blocked nine shots in the game, and none was bigger than his penalty-shot save in the final three minutes of regulation. It kept hope alive and led to a McDonough goal at the other end off a Britton assist to tie things at 14-14 with 2:41 to play.
