RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University has been tabbed a host for the first round of the Postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. The Lancers are just the second team to ever qualify for and host the event in its first year as an NCAA Division I program.
Pepperdine will be CBU's first-round matchup Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the CBU Events Center. The Lancer men will then host Loyola Marymount in the first round of the 2019 College Basketball Invitational at an altered time of 7:30 p.m.
CBU is just one of eight Division I institutions to host a postseason first round tournament game it is playing in for both men's and women's basketball this year. Coastal Carolina, Davidson, Georgetown, NC State, Providence, South Florida, TCU and West Virginia are the other seven schools.
The two games will be ticketed as a single-event doubleheader. Tickets are available now and can be purchased by phone at 877-456-LANCER or online at cbulancers.com/postseason.
CBU ended the regular season with an 18-11 overall record and took second in the Western Athletic Conference with an 11-5 conference run. The Lancers bounced back from a 1-6 start by winning 12 of its last 14 games and nine straight at one point. Jarrod Olson earned WAC Coach of the Year honors for guiding his team to a runner-up finish in the conference.
The Lancers were announced as an automatic qualifier for the WNIT on Sunday night, and then revealed to be a first-round host on Monday night when the complete bracket was released. Florida Gulf Coast is the only other team to qualify for and host the WNIT in its first season of D-I basketball in 2007-08.
The WNIT is an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation's top women's Division I basketball teams. All games, including the semifinals and championship, are hosted by participating schools. Every round is single elimination.
The Postseason WNIT features 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games and the championship. The championship game is televised live nationally.
