RIVERSIDE -- Madeline Wiese won three events – two diving and one swimming – to play a big part in California Baptist University defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 128-115 with a shorthanded squad.
The Lancers were out nine key swimmers due to injuries and illness on Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center, but got big days from several individuals to put them over the top of an Athenas team that ranks 11th in NCAA Division III.
CBU improves to 2-2-1 in dual competition this season. The Lancers will next host Western Athletic Conference foe Wyoming on Thursday at 1 p.m. and the divers will then take part in the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational Friday, Jan. 17 through Sunday, Jan. 19.
In just her second event diving for the Lancers, Wiese swept both boards with 275.10 points on 3-meter and 272.18 at 1-meter. Both scores are historically significant and rank top three in CBU's record book.
Swimmers Rebeca Oviedo and Rita Smirnova also won three events for the Lancers. They both swam on the victorious 500-yard freestyle relay team with Wiese and Hannah Parson. The quartet locked up the team win in the final event of the day when they hit the wall in four minutes and 42.51 seconds.
Smirnova swept the 50 (24.54) and 100 frees (53.12). Oviedo also won the 200 and 500-yard freestyles with respective times of 1:55.97 and 5:11.56.
Nicole Cienega logged another victory for CBU in the 300 butterfly (3:14.21) and also took second in the 300 individual medley (3:25.85).
Diving really proved to be the difference-maker for CBU. The Lancers not only won both boards, but swept first through third each time, as well. Kiree Lowe took second place on both 1-meter (249.68) and 3-meter (261.15), while Savannah Uhlir took third both times with respective scores of 246.60 and 257.85 and Madison Liu took fourth in each event.
Martha Aguilar logged two top-three times for CBU. She took second in the 1000 free (10:46.48) and third in the 500 free (5:20.71). The Lancers also got runner-up swims from Emily Longfellow (3:25.53) and Hannah Houlton (53.92) in the 300 back and 100 free, respectively.
Faith Brazil (3:45.68) and Alexa Melara (3:49.65) also finished second and third in the 300 backstroke. Houlton, Brazil, Cienega and Lauren McKenna started the day with a runner-up finish in the 500-medley relay (5:23.19).
