LOS ANGELES – Evan Honer and Zane Freeman both reached the finals of the 3-meter board and secured top-18 finishes to highlight day one of the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational for California Baptist University on Friday.
Honer secured 15th place with a final score of 553.90 points, while Freeman took 18th (530.25) at the Spieker Aquatics Center. The Lancers will return to the UCLA Diving Invite on Saturday and Sunday with a 10:30 a.m. start both days. The men will compete on the platform and the women on 3-meter Saturday.
"This is one of the biggest diving invites in the country, and the first time we had two male divers make the finals," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said.
All three CBU men finished in the top-23 on Friday. Honer moved him up two spots from his No. 17 standing at the end of prelims (270.45), as he made the final cut by less than two points. Freeman stood in 15th place at the end of prelims, with a 277.65. Tyler Stevens took 23rd on the 3-meter board with a 234.95.
"Zane had a great showing in prelims to lock in 15th in prelims and gave himself an opportunity to compete in the finals with divers from the SEC, Pac-12, Big 10 and more," Couto said. "Evan continues to show his consistency and qualified through prelims and finished 15th in an extremely talented field."
The Lancer women competed in a deep field of 55 divers on the 1-meter board. CBU has a chance to compete against Western Athletic Conference opponents in Northern Arizona and New Mexico State.
"The women's field is stacked and yet we were very consistent," Couto said. "NAU is the reigning WAC champions, yet we were right on their heels and are up the challenge."
Madeline Wiese, the reigning WAC Diver of the Week, led CBU and took 36th (212.05). Savannah Uhlir was not far off in 38th (209.70), while Kiree Lowe (195.80) and Madison Liu (163.70) in 44th and 52nd, respectively.
"Our top-three finishers were all within 15 points of one another, with Madeline leading the way. Our divers have the opportunity to not only dive but beat out divers from Utah, Wyoming, UCLA, Cal, Hawaii, Fresno State and many more teams."
