LOS ANGELES – California Baptist University saved its best for last on the final day of the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational on Sunday.
Evan Honer and Zane Freeman qualified for the finals for the second time in three tries – this on the 1-meter board, while the women logged their top finishes of the week on the platform.
Honer reached the finals for all three events, but saved his best finish for last by taking eighth place overall on 1-meter with a 12-dive score of 558.10. The true freshman scored a 290.40 in the prelims, which put him in seventh place.
Freeman hit his final dive in prelims to stamp his ticket to the finals for the second time, with a 232.55 score that gave him a 1.5 edge in points to advance. The junior took 18th place overall (474.40) after he improved in the finals, with a 241.85.
"Evan continues to rival the best of them," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "Zane had to hit his last dive in prelims to make finals and that he did. He gave himself another opportunity to make the final event with some of the best divers in the country."
Kiree Lowe logged the top finish on the week for herself and the women overall, as she took 17th with a five-dive score of 186.25 on the platform. Savannah Uhlir (170.05) and Madison Liu (156.30) took 24th and 30th, respectively.
"Our women had their best showing on platform today, with Kiree leading the way," Couto said. "Kiree had some amazing dives and really impressed the judges. Savannah nailed some big dives, too, for her best finish at the invite."
The Lancers bested divers from Utah, Northern Arizona, Wyoming, USC, Boise State, Cal, New Mexico, UNLV, Fresno State, UCLA, Cal Poly, Hawaii, Missouri and more.
