Lancers Tame Cougars

RIVERSIDE — Brandon Boyd and Milan Acquaah both erupted for 22 points to lead California Baptist University to an 85-53 win over Chicago State on Wednesday night in the CBU Events Center.
The Lancers have now won four-straight games to improve to 14-5 and 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. CBU will next host Kansas City on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. Chicago State drops to 4-18 and is still searching for its first win in WAC play.
Acquaah went 9-14 from the field and dished out five assists, while Boyd went 8-14 from the field and 4-9 from beyond the arc. The pair combined for 44 of the Lancers' 85 points and shot 60 percent from the field.
De'jon Davis continued to be a terror on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds and six points during his 23 minutes of action. Tre Armstrong also had a notable night, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
The Lancers shot 48 percent from the field (32-66), helped by 14 assists. Defensively, the Lancers limited Chicago State to 38 percent (19-50) from the field. CBU also won the rebounding match, outrebounding the Cougars, 42-30.
CBU built a 17-point lead (41-24) at halftime. Acquaah (11), Boyd, and Ferron Flavors Jr. all scored at least eight points in the first 20 minutes. The Lancers posted a 22-12 lead in rebounds, including nine offensive boards. They also shot 50 percent from the field (18-36) and held the Cougars to 35 percent (8-23).
In the early going, Zach Pirog brought the house down at the 15:39 mark in the first half, taking off for a monster dunk over a Cougar defender.

CBU controlled the tempo for most of the first half, using a 20-5 run to secure a double-digit lead after the first nine minutes. In fact, the Lancers recorded their third straight game of holding their opponents to single digits for the first nine minutes of the contest. Grand Canyon didn't score their 10th point until the 9:34 mark, while Bethesda crossed double digits with 6:47 to play. Tonight, the Cougars scored their 10th point with 10:46 to go.
Flavors Jr. gave the Lancers a 13 point lead at the 7:40 mark after knocking down a high arcing three to beat the shot clock.

The Lancers kept the Cougars out of reach in the second half, growing their lead to 21, 52-31, after an Acquaah three.
It was all downhill from there, as the Lancers cruised to a 30 point victory for the second straight game.
