CBU Uses Big Second Half to Pull Away from Cal Poly, Finish a Perfect Home Non-Conference Slate

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist took a hard-fought 61-51 win over Cal Poly in Riverside today, improving the Lancers' record to 8-0, the nation's best mark. The victory also improved their win streak, giving them 11 in-a-row, tied with Boise State for the seventh-longest active stretch in the NCAA.
Both teams struggled to get things going in the first half as the 20-20 halftime line indicated, but the Lancers used a 26-11 third quarter to overcome the Mustangs of Cal Poly.
The quarter opened with the Lancers going on a 10-0 run, followed by a 13-5 run to close out the third. Dorcas Wu led the charge for CBU to open the second half, scoring eight of her team-high 10 points in the frame, going a perfect 3-3 from the field in the process.
After missing a handful of games with an injury, Britany Thomas returned to action, scoring seven points to go with a team-high 12 rebounds. Ane Olaeta finished with a game-high nine assists, and Caitlyn Harper poured in eight points to go with a game-high four blocks.
DOMINANT DEFENSE
The Lancers have shown their prowess on defense all season, but today was a special outing. For just the second time in the Division I era, CBU held their opponents without a three-pointer for the entirety of the game as the Mustangs went 0-11 from beyond the arc. The last time California Baptist accomplished this feat was back in January of 2019 when they held Chicago State to a 0-9 clip.
THE GREAT BASQUE BALLER
All year long, Ane Olaeta has been leading this Lancer team in nearly every way possible. She averages by far the most playing time at nearly 32 minutes per game as well as leading the team in points (107), assists (65) and steals (24). Now the only way to measure her impact is on a national level.
Olaeta currently sits among the nation's best in multiple categories. Her 65 assists are the most in Division I, 14 more than McKenna Hofschild at Colorado St., while her 8.1 assists per game put her third on that list. She gets it done on the defensive end of the court as well, sitting in a tie for fourth-most steals in the NCAA with 24. She is the only player in Division I who ranks top-15 in both assists and steals.
