RIVERSIDE – After back-to-back quality wins against San Diego State and UC Riverside, the California Baptist women's basketball team will be right back at it on short rest. They will start week three by hosting William Jessup University on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the CBU Events Center before taking to the road against UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
Senior leadership has played a big role for CBU so far this season as Britney Thomas and Ane Olaeta continue to blaze a path for the Lancers. Olaeta took over the fourth quarter of the SDSU game to ensure the Lancers' victory while nearly notching a triple-double (10 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds) against UC Riverside. Thomas averaged a double-double last week (18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game) against SDSU and UCR, ultimately earning her the honors of the Ticketsmarter WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
CBU lived by the three last season but refused to die by it this year. When playing in the CBU Events Center, the Lancers are holding opponents to just 18.8 percent (9-48) from three-point land. That is best in the WAC for any team that has played more than one game. The Lancers are averaging 20.8 assists per game and are doing so without the help of their second-best assist woman from a season ago, Georgia Dale. In terms of national rankings, CBU currently sits No. 11 in NCAA Division I in assist-per-game average in Division I, less than one assist per game behind the likes of Indiana, Louisville, and South Florida.

Last year's matchup between these two teams produced one of the most exciting games of the season, with the Lancers prevailing in double-overtime by a score of 85-81. The Lancers will need to replace 47 points from last year's victory as Lexy Ram (31 points in 2019) has since graduated and Georgia Dale (16 points in 2019) looks to start her season in January.
There's no book on the 2020-21 Gauchos just yet, as they will open up their season against UCLA on Wednesday, Dec. 9th. Though they haven't played yet this year, UCSB is returning their top-two scorers from last season in Ila Lane and Danae Miller. The two combined for 49 points and 26 boards against a short
