STOCKTON – Chad Castillo hit the first home run of the season for California Baptist University, but Pacific took a lead in the season-opening series with a 13-2 win on Sunday.
The Lancers will look to split the series in the finale at Klein Family Field on Monday at noon. Pacific goes into Monday with a 2-1 record, while CBU is 1-2.
Along with Castillo,
John Glenn and
Jeff Bruyntjens had hits in the game. Castillo got CBU on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.
Grady Tuohy scored on the blast after drawing a one-out walk.
Three Lancer pitchers:
Christian Culpepper,
Grant King and
Jacob Wilson made their CBU debuts on Sunday. Culpepper (four),
Jacob McCarvel (three) and King (one) combined for eight strikeouts in the game.
The true freshman, Culpepper, also started a 1-6-3 double play on a quick shot up the middle.
Catcher
Rory Smith had another web gem in the game, as he threw out a would-be base stealer at second even after blocking the ball in the dirt.
There were three other near homers in the game for the Lancers. Castillo, Glenn and
Nick Plaia all showed warning-track power earlier in the game, but all three drives were caught at the fence.
