OREM – California Baptist University had won all three previous meetings between these two teams, but on a night of celebration for Utah Valley's seniors it was the Wolverines who broke through for their first win in the series, taking the 74-57 decision in Orem.
For the fourth time in six games, Lexy Ram led the Lancers' scoring tally with 15 points. The senior also added three blocks and two steals.
Delacy Brown was right behind Ram in the scoring column with 14. Georgia Dale rounded out the list of Lancers in double-figures; she had 11 with four rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Tiena Afu had a homecoming of sorts. The Sandy, Utah native played her final game in the state of Utah and compiled nine points, nine boards, two blocks and a steal.
The first quarter started off slowly as the Lancers shot just 18.8 percent (3-16) from the field for eight points in the first quarter. The second quarter opened with the Lancers going on a 9-2 run, which dropped the deficit to single digits.
By the time the first-half buzzer sounded, CBU had recovered some ground and trailed 33-22 on the back of strong defense, which resulted in three blocks and three steals.
The second half saw the Lancers press for nearly all 20 minutes, and even pull within five points mid-way through the third quarter, but they were unable to complete the comeback.
CBU falls to 13-15 overall and 4-9 in conference play with three games left in the regular season. The Lancers will travel to the Pacific Northwest for a game against the Seattle U Redhawks on Saturday, game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
