IRVINE – Two teams looking to rebound from Thursday night loses met at Championship Soccer Stadium at the OC Great Park Saturday, as California Baptist University men's soccer pulled out the overtime win against Air Force, 1-0. This victory marks the second time the Lancers have overcome the Falcons, both wins coming in extra time.
The Lancers' record now stands at 11-3-3 on the season and 6-2-2 in conference as the Falcons move to 8-7-1 on the year and 7-3 in the WAC.
"That is one of the best teams we have played this year. It's no surprise that they were a tournament team last year and they have a phenomenal group of seniors with elite athleticism. So to battle with them after knowing we didn't get what we deserved on Thursday and with so much fatigue is just a huge testament to our character, said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the game. "I'm really proud of the group, and honestly, I can't remember a better golden goal than that one. Bryan has been fantastic all year and he showed with that incredible goal tonight why should be the WAC Offensive Player of the Year, in my opinion."
After a fast and scoreless regulation, CBU applied heavy pressure in the first overtime period, keeping Air Force on its heels defensively. The Lancers finally broke through and created enough space just outside the box for Jordan Lane to set up Bryan Iliohan for his 13th goal of the season and second game-winner.
The teams combined for 25 total shots, but put just nine on frame. CBU goalkeeper Gage Rogers denied all four challenges he faced and stopped even more before they could develop into a threat.
Iliohan's 13th goal of the season cushions his lead on top of the conference statistical table, with Air Force's Tristan Trager in second with 11. For Lane, it was his third assist of the year and seventh as a Lancer.
