RIVERSIDE – Coming into this weekend's matchup between the top two teams in the conference, it was no secret that California Baptist would be tested like few teams had tried so far this season, but the Lancers were up for the challenge, as Ane Olaeta and Britney Thomas led the team to an overtime 81-77 victory.
The Lancers now sit at 19-0 on the season and 11-0 in the Western Athletic Conference and have moved into a tie with inactive Princeton for the longest active win streak in the nation at 22-straight dating back to last season.
Five Lancers scored in double-figures to secure the hard-fought win, led by Thomas' 24 and a season-high 13 from Tiena Neale, nine of which came in the first half when the Lancers needed buckets. Olaeta dropped 12 points to go with her third-straight game of double-digit assists with 11. Caitlyn Harper scored 11 while adding nine boards and a game-high four steals, and Sydney Palma rounded out five Lancer top-scorers with 10 to go with five rebounds.
Grand Canyon came out hot, jumping to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter and ultimately leading at the end of the first 23-19 while Lopes freshman Katie Scott reached 10 points on 4-5 shooting. She would end up with a game-high 26 points while battling it out down low against the tandem of Thomas and Harper.
The Lancers would use a 15-2 run in the second quarter to build an eight-point lead before Grand Canyon would rebalance the scales, ending the quarter on their own 8-3 run. The half would end with CBU leading 39-36.
The Lancers would build to a 10-point lead with a little over seven minutes left to go in the game, seemingly finding their groove and pulling away for good, but the Lopes would soon go on an 11-2 run to tie the game up. Both teams would go scoreless in the final 90 seconds leading to the Lancers' first overtime game of the year.
The two teams remained tied halfway through the extra period, but Olaeta and Thomas outscored the Lopes 10-6 in the final two-and-a-half minutes, including Olaeta's finishing blow-by layup, to put the game away for good.

For the first time this season, both teams would shoot 20 or more free throws in the same CBU game. The Lancers attempted and made a season-high, going 20-28 on Friday night, while Grand Canyon attempted 20, making just 10.
