RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's basketball team clinched its first-ever Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship after downing Grand Canyon 79-64 in the CBU Events Center Saturday afternoon.
Ane Olaeta, the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, dominated the Lopes to a season-high 26 points and nine assists. It marks CBU's first winter sport team WAC championship, joining women's cross country and baseball as the only programs to have claimed a conference title since transitioning to NCAA Division I in 2018.
The Lancers also have a chance to make WAC history and become the sixth team all-time to make an undefeated conference run, joining San Diego State (94-95), Colorado State (98-99), Louisiana Tech (02-03), Fresno State (09-10) and New Mexico State (16-17).
The Lancers could hold their own special spot in WAC history with one final sweep, as the conference has never had a team go undefeated in the regular season since it began sponsoring the sport back in 1990-91. CBU will close out the regular season at Seattle U on March 5-6.
The Lancers' 20th win of the season also pushed their active win-streak to 23 in-a-row, leaving inactive Princeton in second with 22 while Bucknell and Florida Gulf Coast are tied for third with 17-straight.
Saturday's game got off to a similar start to the previous, as the Lopes led early and often in the first half. Grand Canyon led by as much as five midway through the second quarter, but a Lancer run led by Taylor Wu's two threes in the final four minutes helped the Lancers grab a two-point lead going into half time.
It was the Ane Olaeta show in the second half, as she scored 19 of her game-high 26 points on 8-13 (61.5 percent) shooting from the field. She also dished out six more assists, bringing her game total to nine, and her season total to 158, an amount that puts her comfortably atop the NCAA rankings, as well as her 8.3 assists-per-game.
Britney Thomas had another impressive performance, scoring 17 points on 7-10 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds and denying a pair of shots. The pair of Thomas and Olaeta combined to account for 54.4 percent of the Lancers' points and did so efficiently by shooting 64.3 percent (18-28) on the night.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lancers still have one more series to go, but will have to stay patient as they are scheduled to go into their bye week before heading to Seattle for a pair of games against the Redhawks on March 5-6.
