PALO ALTO --- California Baptist University would face off with a pair of Pac-12 foes on Saturday, unable to record a win against either Cal or Stanford, dropping the contests 7-4 and 5-0, respectively.
GAME ONE
The Lancers came out of the gates hot in game one, scoring in spectacular fashion in the first and second innings. In the first,
Ashley McBay would get the hitting started with a single to centerfield and eventually working her way to third. McBay then broke for home, scoring on a rare steal of home plate.
The second inning was highlighted by
Molly Kolander, who mashed her second homer in two games, both against Cal, to left-center. Prior to yesterday's first home run, Kolander had played 79 games for CBU without a home run, but that turned around quickly as she then launched two within a span of three plate appearances.
The Golden Bears would go on to score seven unanswered over the next three innings to take a lead they wouldn't give back. The Lancers made a late push in the sixth inning as
Maile Olsen singled to center to bring in
Abby Robertson and later scored on a
Tiana Patrick ground out, getting the Lancers back within three.
Kerisa Viramontes would make her second start of the tournament, this time lasting five innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and five strikeouts. Goldsmith would close out the final inning of the game, picking up two strikeouts in her short time in the circle. Viramontes' record moves to 4-3 on the season.
GAME TWO
In the Saturday finale, CBU would not have the bats to hang with Stanford as the Lancers managed just four hits in the first game of the weekend against the Cardinal. The 5-0 final score was nearly a much closer game as the first three runs nearly never happened. With two-outs, the Cardinal hitter sent a rocket to first base as
Amanda Argomaniz got a diving glove on it but was unable to squeeze it successfully. One run would score on that play, and another two would score, and two batters later, a single to left would plate two more.
Giana Lopez would get the start for the Lancers but is still looking for her first win as the loss drops her season record to 0-5.
WHAT'S NEXT
California Baptist will return tomorrow morning for an 11 a.m. game time to try to even the series against Stanford.
