Softball Battles It Out With San Diego State at Home

RIVERSIDE -- California Baptist University softball took on San Diego State in Riverside on Friday night. Although the Lancers battled tough, it was the Aztecs who claimed victory on both ends of the doubleheader, winning game one, 5-2, and game two, 2-0. The losses drop the Lancers record to 5-12 on the season with another contest against SDSU on deck on Saturday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE

CBU led early after Tiana Patrick launched her second home run of the season, also scoring Nicole Stark, who got both starts at first on Friday, to put CBU up 2-1 in the bottom of the second. It would remain a one-run game until the top of the seventh when a two-out error would rear its head in the form of four unearned runs when SDSU smacked a grand slam to pull away.

GAME TWO

The Lancers would tally four hits and leave five stranded on the bases in the Friday finale, but only the Aztecs would manage to plate runs in the nightcap. SDSU used doubles in the top of the fifth and sixth to plate its runs.

Brittany Galvez would record the Lancers only multi-hit game with a pair of hits in game one. She went 3-5 overall. Patrick claimed the Lancers only two RBI on her homer in game one.

Game one starting pitcher Giana Lopez allowed eight hits and just one earned run, as the error in the seventh wiped away four potential earned runs from her record. Game two starter Gretchen Goldsmith started her first game of the year after a respectable long relief outing against Stanford last week. She threw seven strong innings, struck out four and walked just three.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lancers will head to San Diego to face the Aztecs again at SDSU Softball Field Saturday for a single game with a 1 p.m. start time. Live stats and a live stream through YouTube will be available for the game.
