IRVINE --- California Baptist University women's soccer team closed out the regular season against Seattle U on Friday, as the Lancers dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime final to the Redhawks.
The Lancers conclude the season at 10-4-3 on the season and 8-4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Lancers secured their second-straight, top-three finish in the conference standings. With the Redhawks' win, Seattle U improved to 11-4-2 on the year and a conference-best 10-2-2 to claim a share of the conference title.
It was a physical game from start to finish as both teams combined for 27 fouls and five yellow cards. The Lancers did well to control the tempo of the game, pinning the Redhawks on their defensive half for most of the contest. CBU ended the game outshooting the Redhawks, 16-12, and had multiple opportunities to find the back of the net.
Karley Weeks and Amy Aquino led the Lancers' offense with three shots, while Rola Badawiya, Faith Lee, and Erin Gallagher recorded two apiece.
The Lancers strung together three quality chances in the final 20 minutes, as Aquino accounted for two of her three shots in that timespan. A header off a corner kick sailed just to the left of the net, and the two teams would regroup and get ready for overtime.
The Redhawks scored the golden goal at the 93rd minute after Gabe Jillings was able to get behind the Lancers' backline.
"We're certainly disappointed with the result," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We absolutely played well enough for the win. I'm really proud of our players' heart, fight, and character throughout the game. Soccer is a humbling game sometimes; you can dominate in every area and not have it go your way. The goal was an odd play where the ball took a weird bounce against the flow of play. There are elements in the competition that you can't control, we can only focus on what we can control, and I thought the team did a very good job of that today! I'm very disappointed for our team. I thought our players deserved more out of that game. Today was the best performance of the year. The team's execution and performance were fantastic today; unfortunately, the ball just didn't bounce our way. Nevertheless, we had another successful season finishing at 10-4-3 and a Top 3 finish in WAC standings for the second year in a row."
With the final game, the Lancers honored Badawiya as the lone senior on the team. Badawiya finishes her two-year career with the Lancer with 34 games played, 44 points, 18 goals, eight assists, seven game-winners, and 111 shots. She etched her name into the record books in 2019, moving to third all-time in consecutive games with a goal (five) and fourth all-time in consecutive games with a point (six).
The Lancers will have a short offseason as they will get back to a regular season in the fall of 2021.
