RIVERSIDE--- Home is where the wins are for the California Baptist women's soccer team, as the squad kept its perfect home streak alive on Sunday evening after besting the University of Nevada 2-0. The Lancers put away a pair of goals while maintaining a shutout for an improved 3-3-1 record on the 2025 season.
Summer Allen picked up her first goal of the year and the first goal of the match in the 11th minute after hitting a volley that came off a clearance from a Nevada defender, lifting the ball out of reach over the goalkeeper for an early CBU lead. Despite outshooting the Lancers in the first half, Mikayla O'Brien and her defense kept the Wolfpack at bay for a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
CBU's offense came to life in the second half, totaling seven shots on frame and four corner kicks across the 45 minutes of action. The Lancers had several solid opportunities to increase their lead, but the Nevada goalkeeper stunned with six impeccable saves to keep the Wolfpack in the game. As time dwindled down and the intensity increased, the fouls continued to become more common as teams grew frustrated in the scoreless second half. Ava Westlund pressed the visitors' backline, and her efforts did not go unrewarded after she was fouled in the box in the 85th minute. The junior forward stepped up for the penalty kick and sank it into the net with practiced ease for a 2-0 victory at CBU Soccer Stadium.
"We had a really good week of training and it showed on the field tonight. We're getting better each day," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Happy for Summer to earn her first collegiate goal. Our midfield did a good job finding Ava in space and she did a great job earning the penalty and putting it away. Defensively, we were organized and showed better discipline and ball winning. We still need to keep working on sharpening some aspects but this was good progress tonight."
Westlund led the game with four shots on goal across her 82 minutes of action, while the squad totaled 11 shots on the night. The Lancers will now turn their attention to Thursday evening as they welcome UC Riverside to CBU for the annual Crosstown Showdown at 7:30 p.m.
