Lancers Open WAC Season in Chicago
1/8/2022 12:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CHICAGO – California Baptist University men's basketball launched a furious rally but came up just short in a 58-56 loss at Chicago State to open Western Athletic Conference play.
The Cougars led by as many as eight, 47-39, with 10 minutes to play but the Lancers fought all the way back and tied the game with a 17-9 run on Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center.
Ty Rowell looked to send the game into overtime when he scored five-straight points off consecutive inbounds plays to tie it at 56-56 with 15 seconds left. The Cougars' Brandon Betson dropped in the game winner with a floater in the lane with three seconds left to seal the win.
"We did not play hard enough or with enough force until deep into the game when our backs were very much against the wall," said CBU head coach Rick Croy. "We scrapped hard at the end to give ourselves a chance, but very difficult to do that on the road."
Dan Akin led CBU with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season on Saturday. Rowell's five points in the final 50 seconds gave him 13 points, six assists and four rebounds. Tre Armstrong joined them in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
California Baptist moves 10-4 on the season and 0-1 in WAC after an 11-day layoff between games due its original WAC opener versus Seattle U being pushed back due to COVID-19 protocols in the Redhawk program. Chicago State improves to 5-12, 1-3 on the year.
"I think we've got really good players and we've got to get them playing well. We will take that on together. That's everyone in it together," Croy said. "I think we have a really good group of players, they proved that through the non-conference. We've got to get our feet underneath us, figure out what we stand for defensively, and I think the offense will come."
