Jimenez, Kovacsics Lead Lancers Past Defeat Reigning WAC Champs On The Road
LAS VEGAS – California Baptist University men's swimming swept their double dual in Las Vegas this weekend, topping the University of Denver 174-126 and defeating the reigning Western Athletic Conference champions UNLV 156-140. The women's side, UNLV and Denver, came out on top at each end of their double duals, 202-98 and 196-104, respectively.
In the pool, Swimmer of the Meet Mark Kovacsics and his wins led the men in the 1,000 and 500-meter freestyle races. The Hungarian freshman clocked a 1,000 time that places him eighth all-time in the program's top-10 list.
Four individuals and a relay team accounted for six first-place finishes out of 14 swimming events on the day. Kovacsics doubled up on his top podium spots, while Remi Fabiani, Jonathan Reiter, and Brendan Man all claimed one solo victory each.
The women's side saw Michaela Trnkova, Naya Koc, and Mia Maspers all claimed a first place finish in events, pacing the women in the pool.
DIVING
The 2022-23 dive season got off to an incredible start as three Lancers qualified for five NCAA Zone Championships. On the men's side, Evan Honer and Gael Jimenez far surpassed the NCAA qualifying marks in both the 1-and-3-meter springboard events, and Natalia Bedolla did the same in her first 1-meter competition.
Jimenez was on point from dive one, setting a new program record in the 3-meter event, posting a score of 382.60. He breaks the record set by Honer in 2020 of 369.23. His 1-meter result of 349.80 was good enough to place him third all-time in the Lancer record book. Bedolla now ranks fourth and ninth all-time in the 1-and-3-meter record books, respectively.
Next up for the teams is the first home meet of the season as the Lancers prepare to host Cal Poly and San Diego at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Saturday, November 5. That meet is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time.
