LOS ANGELES – California Baptist University women's basketball competed in their first true road test of the season, heading to Los Angeles to take on the Trojans of USC in the Galen Center on Wednesday night. The Lancers led at the break, but Southern California regrouped and protected home court to the tune of a 69-58 victory. The result drops CBU's record to 2-5 on the year, while USC remains unbeaten at 7-0.
Freshman Grace Schmidt led the way for CBU, posting her third straight game of double-digit scoring, leading the Lancers with 14 to go with a career-high seven rebounds. Dorcas Wu poured in a dozen off the bench, all of which came from beyond the arc on 4-7 shooting from deep.
The Lancers capitalized on Trojan mistakes in the first half, forcing USC into 17 turnovers. Coming into the game, the Trojans' season high for turnovers was 18. They would nearly match that in the first half by committing 17 turnovers, finishing the night with 26. This opened the door for CBU to take a 27-25 lead into the locker rooms at the half.
USC flipped the script in the third, locking down on defense themselves and outscoring the Lancers 21-9 while also posting an 8-0 advantage on the offensive glass. That frame would be the difference as CBU played the Trojans basically even again in the fourth.
The Lancers will stay on the road for their next game, heading to the coast to take on Long Beach State on Saturday, December 3, at 4 p.m.
