PHOENIX – California Baptist and Grand Canyon put on a show on Saturday, playing an exciting game on New Year's Eve, with the Lopes claiming the win, 70-60. The Lancers were led once again by freshman forward Grace Schmidt, whose 16 points led CBU in scoring for the fourth time this season.
Schmidt also paced the Lancers on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds and two steals. Nae Nae Calhoun was right behind Schmidt with 15 points, a dozen of which came in the fourth quarter. Calhoun, along with Dorcas Wu (nine points, five rebounds), accounted for all five of the Lancer hits from deep.
CBU led by five after one, but a 13-2 run by the Lopes in the second quarter would lead to the home team taking a five-point advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Lopes would control most of the third quarter as well, building that lead to 10 before the Lancers closed out with a 7-2 run to reset the difference to the same as the halftime gap.
CBU continued that streak to open the fourth, getting the GCU lead down to just one after a minute-and-change and two points with six minutes left. However, after each Lancer surge, the Lopes would answer with one of their own, never letting their lead fall to less than a two-possession game after that.
The Lancers (5-8, 1-1 WAC) will remain on the road for the next two games to take on Seattle U and Utah Valley. The Lancers will first face off with the Redhawks (1-11, 1-1 WAC) in Seattle on Thursday, January 5, at 6:00 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
