ELKHART – The California Baptist University swim teams successfully opened day one at the National Invitational Championship (NIC) hosted by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The field consists of over 700 athletes from all across the NCAA looking to medal one last time during the 2021-22 season.
After the first round of events, the Lancer women sit in 23rd place overall with 16 points. The men had a particularly good start to the meet, sitting in third place with 212 points. Only Tennessee (279) and Ohio State (236) earned more points than the Lancer men on Thursday.
The 200-yard freestyle relays opened the finals on Thursday night, highlighted by a record-setting swim by the California Baptist men, who won the event in a time of one minute and 18.75 seconds. The squad of Estevao Hornos, Remi Fabiani, Brandon Schuster and Jacob Leahy broke not only the CBU program record of 1:18.95 that was set during the 2018-19 season, but also created a new best time for the NIC, formerly held by Grand Canyon which was set at 1:18.99 back in 2014.
Fabiani set a new NIC record in the 50 free on his way to a gold medal finish, sprinting there and back in 19.62 seconds, breaking the former record by .06 seconds. That time was set in 2019 by Jerome Heidrich, a former Lancer who also owned the program record (19.53) until Fabiani shattered that this season with a time of 19.23 at the conference championships.
Robert Moseley continued his hot streak in post-season events and found himself upon the podium in Elkhart, taking third in the 50 butterfly in a time of 21.39. Josh Walters joined Moseley in the finals, finishing less than half a second behind in 21.86 to claim 12th place. Moseley also earned a sixth place finish in the 200 IM, completing the course in 1:47.47.
Jonathan Reiter grabbed another top-10 finish for CBU, finishing the 50 breaststroke in 25.15 for 10th place honors. Leahy would try for two podiums in one day, just missing in the 50 backstroke coming in fourth in 22.27. Hornos did his best to double up freestyle glory, taking part in the 50 free finals, claiming 10th place with a time of 20.39. The men's 400 medley relay closed out the night, earning silver by a hair, out-touching Oakland University by .03 seconds in a time of 3:11.03.
Patricia Van Law rewrote her own second-best program time in the 200 IM, finishing 14th in 2:01.77. Van Law had previously set the second-fastest time at the WAC Championships with a time of 2:01.85. Vianka Hoyer took on the field in the 50 fly, taking 14th in a time of 24.82.
