ELKHART – Both California Baptist University swim teams logged top-20 finishes on the final day of the National Invitational Championship (NIC) hosted by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) at Beacon Health Aquatic Center.
The Lancers produced five more All-American, top-eight swims on the final day of the meet. It led CBU's men led to a seventh-place finish as a team with 422 points, while the women took 17th with a 116 total. Collectively, California Baptist beat out teams from Colorado State, Cincinnati, West Virginia Virginia Tech, UNLV, Air Force, Villanova, Pepperdine and San Diego in the standings.
On the women's side, Ohio State won the team title (828), while Florida International (623) and Tennessee (575.5) took the other two podium spots. Tennessee won on the men's side (787), while Ohio State (670) and Texas Christian (661) took second and third.
CBU secured two runner-up finishes on Saturday and Remi Fabiani had a hand in them both. He started with a second-place swim in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 43.03 seconds. It beat out the meet record of 43.08 set by fellow Lancer Jerome Heidrich in 2019, but Ohio State's James Ward just out touched Fabiani at the wall for the gold (42.88).
Fabiani then swam the leadoff leg of the 400-free relay that took second place. Robert Moseley, Brandon Schuster and Jacob Leahy completed the quartet that finished in 2:54.17, which was again better than the meet record of 2:54.39 set by CBU's Heidrich, Josh Walters, Schuster and Leahy in 2019, but Ohio State was in front again (2:53.15).
Jonathan Reiter added another top-four performance for the Lancers on the men's side. He took fourth place in the 200 breast in 1:56.96 and added a 13th-place swim in the 100 individual medley (50.62).
It was Giulia Decataldo who had a big day for the women. She took seventh in the 1000 free (10:08.50) and 10th in the 1650 free (16:54.13) in absolutely grueling double-duty assignment.
Patricia Van Law ended her illustrious career with another All-American, eighth-place finish in the 200 back. She clocked a 1:59.39 in the finals after she booked her ticket with a 1:58.81 that was good for seventh in the prelims.
CBU's distance swimmers showed their strength, even beyond Decataldo, as there were three more top-16 swims in the 1000 and the mile. Rebeca Oviedo took 14th in the 1000 (10:22.54) and 15th in the 1650 (17:07.65), while Lydia Bartlett took 16th in the 1000 (10:23.71), as well.
