CBU Ends Cougar Challenge With Win Over Belmont

PULLMAN – For the second week in a row, a dominant offensive performance led California Baptist University volleyball to end the week with a win.
The Lancers defeated Belmont in four sets (22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16) to conclude the Washington State Cougar Challenge with a victory.
It was the final match of a doubleheader on Friday, with CBU dropping a four-set match to CSU Bakersfield in the morning (20-25, 27-25, 26-24, 26-24). California Baptist moves to 2-4 on the year, while CSU Bakersfield improved to 1-3 and Belmont dropped to 1-5.
A productive and efficient offense led the Lancers to victory over the Bruins. The Lancers hit .328 as a team (61-16-137) and held Belmont to a .195 clip, thanks to a 65-50 advantage in digs.
Scherine Dahoue and Christine Graf were nearly unstoppable in the match. Dahoue logged 19 kills on 35 errorless swings for a .543 hitting percentage and added 12 digs and two aces for a double-double. Graf notched 17 kills at a .484 clip (17-2-31).
Setters Reese Reed and Leah Pease kept Belmont guessing, with 24 and 23 assists, respectively. Paige Johnstone recorded a team-high 18 digs, eight assists and two aces. Three Lancers tallied double-doubles, as Dahoue and Pease had 12 digs, while Mia Jerue finished with 13 kills and 10 digs.
In the opener versus the Roadrunners, Jerue went off for a season-high 22 points on 18 kills, three aces and two blocks to go with four digs. Pease also had a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs.
Graf and Laura Walewska were dual threats as each had at least 12 kills and five blocks. Graf had 13 kills on a .333 hitting percentage (13-4-27) and five blocks. Walewska posted six blocks and a .556 hitting percentage thanks to 12 kills and two errors on 18 swings.
Johnstone had a team-high 16 digs, while Cassidy Dennison nearly had a double-double of her own with nine kills, eight digs and two blocks.

The Lancers will make their home debut as they host a tournament on Sept. 9-10. CBU will first face Idaho State on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The Lancers go on to face Air Force and UC Riverside in the Crosstown Showdown on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
