WESTWOOD – Day one of the Bruin Diving Invite hosted by UCLA was a good start to the three-day as the men's squad landed one diver on the podium while the women had three strong showings in the prelims.
Gael Jimenez was the only male Lancer to dive in the 1-meter competition on day one, and he did not disappoint. He began by qualifying in fourth place in the prelims with a score of 321.40. In the finals, he added a 362.8-point effort to move up to third place on the day. Jimenez finished behind Jack Ryan of Stanford, who took 12th place in the 2022 NCAA Championships in this event, and Shangfei Wang of USC, who claimed 18th place in the 2022 NCAA Championships in this event.
CBU had three participants in a deep field that contained 72 competitors on Friday in the 3-meter event. Natalie Bedolla (246.45 points) finished 20th in the prelims, missing the finals by two spots and just under six points. Teammates Audrey Easter (199.50) and Madison Liu (191.00) finished 48th and 53rd, respectively.
There was an additional event at play on Friday as the women participated in a team diving event. Ultimately the Lancers, represented by Bedolla, Liu, and Easter, finished in fifth place with 253.80 points, coming in just behind host UCLA.
Unlike other dive meets this season, the scoring in the Bruin Dive Invite is the same as the divers will see in the NCAA Zone Competitions in March. Final results are a combination of the divers' preliminary and final round dives, unlike other meets where the scores in the final round alone decide the winner of that event.
The Bruin Dive Invite continues tomorrow in Westwood. Saturday's events will have the men on the 3-meter board while the women will take on the platform.
