RIVERSIDE – Grand Canyon came to Riverside riding a six-game winning streak but left without increasing it as California Baptist University women's basketball took down the Lopes by a score of 78-70. The win, CBU's fourth in their past five games, gets them back to .500 on the season at 9-9 while sitting a half-game back of GCU at 5-2 in the Western Athletic Conference rankings.
Trinity San Antonio and Grace Schmidt again set the tone for the Lancers finishing with 20 and 13 points, respectively. San Antonio had her hand in everything, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing four assists, and swiping four steals. Schmidt added eight boards while shooting 6-9 despite the Lopes' height advantage.
Brittany Klaman had one of her best performances of the season, scoring 11 points with three three-pointers and assisting on another five Lancer makes. Dorcas Wu stuffed the stat sheet again, coming up just one rebound short of a double-double, putting up 11 points, nine rebounds, five dimes, three blocks, and a pair of steals.
The Lancers opened the game with a strong first quarter, closing the first quarter with a 15-5 run to take a seven-point lead. CBU held a six-point advantage at halftime, thanks largely to San Antonio's 18 first-half points.
The game was blown wide open early in the third quarter when the Lancers used an 11-0 run to build a 15-point lead midway through the frame. The Lopes fought back in the fourth but never got closer than eight points, thanks to Nae Nae Calhoun, who scored all nine of her points in the final period to seal the victory.
The Lancers are back on the road next week, heading to Texas to take on UT Arlington. The Lancers opened conference play with a 67-61 home win against the Lady Mavs on December 29.
