The Lancers Place Both Teams in the Top 10 at Nuttycombe Invitational

MADISON--- At the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin, the California Baptist University cross country team competed against 55 of the 60 ranked programs on both the men's and women's sides. The race marked the first time in the program the Lancers have raced in the prestigious invitational.
The women picked up an eighth-place finish with 322 points, while the men put together an incredible final push and picked up a fourth-place finish.
The top-tier competition was not the only element the Lancers had to contend with, as the conditions were rainy and muddy throughout the races. The weather was in the high 40s, and the course quickly turned into mud as the races progressed. The women were the first to brave the elements in the Women's 6K Championship.
Yasna Petrova was the only CBU runner in the top 50 through the initial 2K stretch. Still, a crucial push over the next 2,000 meters saw Grace McLaughlin and Greta Karinauskiate gain significant ground and enter themselves into the top 55. In the end, Mclaughlin pushed to the top 30 with a 29th place finish, running an astounding 20:32.3 mark, and was the first Lancer across the line.
Petrova came in second amongst the CBU runners in 35th place at 20:36.6. Petrova, no stranger to top finishes, was the Lancer's top finisher at the program's first-ever trip to Nationals a season ago and once again was a critical part of CBU's incredible finish in the race. Greta Karinauskaite was the third finisher for the Lancers, clocking in at 20:45.0 and finishing in 52nd place. Emilia Mikszuta was the only other Lancer in the top 100, placing 75th of 250 runners.
Rounding out the race for the women were Karin Gosek, Maja Dzialoszewska, Carlota Rodes, and Marina Trave, who all finished in the top 170. The women's eighth-place finish placed them ahead of #8 Washington and #10 Colorado, which were ranked slightly above the Lancers in the recent national poll.
The men's 8K championship race was neck-and-neck throughout, with no distinctive advantage or groups emerging through the race's first half. Arturs Medveds, the team's top place, kept himself close to the leaders from start to finish, never dropping out of the top 25. Medveds reeled in the groups; the best placement of the day was 23rd at 23:53.8 and gave CBU 23 points to jumpstart their result.
Next across the line was Giedrius Valincius, who pushed into the top 50 at 24:06.8. Matias Reynaga, Rikus Van Niekerk, and Valentin Soca all earned top-80 finishes, with Reynaga topping the group at 57th. Pedro Marin and Massimiliano Berti rounded out the group with
The fourth-place finish placed CBU ahead of Stanford, Butler, Texas Air Force, Notre Dame, Villanova, Syracuse, and Wisconsin, all of which checked in higher than the Lancers in the latest national polls.
The incredible performance had Head Coach Adam Tribble ecstatic, especially given the harsh conditions on the course.
"Amazing day in some of the most difficult conditions possible. I could not be more thrilled with the grit and determination both teams showed. It didn't go perfectly, of course, but as Hannibal said, 'we will find a way or make one,' and that is exactly what they did. Huge day for CBU."
The second group for the Lancers will be in action on Saturday, October 14th, at the Highlander Invitational, while the rest of the group will prepare for the Western Athletic Championships in Abilene, Texas.
