RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist women's soccer program ended their conference season in second, earning themselves a first-round bye for a trip to the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament. The Lancers are set to face Seattle U on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. after the Redhawks downed Southern Utah in the opening round 2-1.
THE LANCERS AT A GLANCE
California Baptist enters the week-long tournament as the number two seed after finishing conference play unbeaten. CBU owns a 6-0-3 conference record that lifted them to a first-round bye and will now face the Redhawks. The Lancers last lost in August against Colorado State and have not dropped a game since, going on a 15-game unbeaten streak. Kristen St. Clair and the squad are coming off two wins in Texas that lifted them to second place to end the season, and they also came away with eight conference awards.
St. Clair was named WAC Coach of the Year for the first time in the CBU Division I era and Noa Schumacher was named WAC Goalkeeper of the Year for her excellent season between the posts. MATCH NOTES
The most recent competition between the Redhawks and Lancers dates to the squads' second match of the WAC season that saw CBU leave victorious. Hauck delivered a perfectly placed low shot into the right corner of the Redhawk's goal for the lone goal of the match and gave the Lancers their first win of the season. CBU outshot Seattle 20 to five, with CBU finding the goal frame eight times over the 90-minute match.
THE REDHAWKS AT A GLANCE
The Redhawks finished their season as the third seed in the WAC Tournament and faced Southern Utah during the tournament's first round. Seattle found the back of the net with ten minutes left in the first half and carried the lead into halftime. Southern Utah ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box five minutes into the second half and evened the score with an upper left-corner goal. The Thunderbirds did well to hold the Redhawks scoreless through the next 30 minutes, but a late header that hit the back of SUU net off a corner would seal a semifinal spot for Seattle.
Seattle earned two major awards during the All-Conference honors, including Co-Defender of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Kait Raffensperger has been phenomenal for the Redhawks in the backline, leading the squad to nine shutouts this season. Kassidy Kirgan was named Freshman of the Year for her efforts in the goal, compiling nine clean sheets and 59 saves across nearly 1500 minutes of action. Caroline Penner leads the Redhawks in goals with eight this season. She initially gave the Redhawks the lead during the tournament's opening round.
