The Lancers End Season at WAC Tournament
11/1/2023 11:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE, CA --- California Baptist women's soccer ended their historic season on Wednesday evening after falling to third-seed Seattle University in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The second-seed Lancers fell to the Redhawks 2-1 in the CBU Soccer Stadium, ending their season 11-2-6 and 6-0-3 in conference play.
The squads started the match slow on both sides, as Seattle was coming off a gritty 2-1 win against Southern Utah in the opening round, and CBU had had ten days off with their first-round bye. The Redhawks fired six shots through the first half and found the back of the net in the 36th minute after Kait Raffensperger beat her way through traffic for a low ball into the bottom left corner. The Redhawks added to their lead with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that netted into the top right corner for a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute.
"We played through some nerves in the first 20 minutes which affected our consistency in keeping the ball. Once we settled down we started to create some dangerous scoring opportunities," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Their first goal came off a corner kick and missed clearance on our part. At half time we made some adjustments and the team did a great job implementing those. We dominated the second half outshooting them 17-3 and 24-9 overall."
After continuing to battle Seattle in front of their goal, the Lancers were awarded a penalty that Sonja Lux scored, but ultimately CBU was unable to complete the comeback. Seattle will now face Grand Canyon in the WAC Championship on Saturday after the Lopes downed the regular season champions, Utah Valley, earlier on Wednesday. California Baptist finished the year with just two losses, the first being back in August against Colorado State.
"This game came down to execution in the 18 yard box and we had our chances . Unfortunately both opponent goals were against the run of play, but that's soccer sometimes, sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way," St Clair continued. "I'm really proud of our teams's heart, class and fight to get back into the game. We got a goal back and were pressing forward, running at them with every possession. I really thought we were going to find the equalizer. Unfortunately we ran out of time and it just wasn't our night tonight. I'm really proud of our players heart, class and effort tonight."
The Lancer's 6-0-3 conference record was their most successful yet in the Division I Era, as it was the first time that CBU did not lose a regular season WAC match. St. Clair's team dominated on the attack this season, as the squad combined for 39 goals and allowed just 13 against all opponents. Kaylee Hauck led the team in goals with seven as a sophomore, and captain Jayden Ramirez followed close behind with five.
Defensively, Noa Schumacher reached new heights this season between the posts and accumulated eight shutouts across 1,700 minutes of action. The 2023 WAC Goalkeeper of the Year made over 65 saves in the goal this season and came in clutch during momentous occasions, like her last-minute penalty kick save against Power 5 Oregon and nine saves against Grand Canyon to keep the Lancer's unbeaten streak alive. Taylor Summit was also named to the All-WAC first team for her incredible performance in the CBU backline this year, and Jana Heinen was awarded the All-WAC second team after she showed out with two goals and three assists from the center back position.
"It's hard to have this be the last game for our seniors. I can't say enough about our senior class and what they have meant to this program. They led by example, selfless leadership and represented CBU the right way on and off the field," said St. Clair.
St. Clair was also named 2023 WAC Coach of the Year after delivering a second-place finish in conference play and going 15 matches unbeaten, a new record for the CBU women's soccer program. Originally predicted to finish fourth in the WAC regular season, the Lancers began the year with a 1-1 draw against Utah Valley and never took their foot off the accelerator during conference play. The squad was the sixth seed last season during the 2022 WAC Tournament, and their comeback to make this year one of their most successful Division I seasons is a testament to St. Clair's coaching.
"Our staff is really proud of this team and the historic season they achieved. Not quite the ending we wanted but a tremendous season nonetheless," finished St. Clair.
