SAN DIEGO - California Baptist University women's basketball moved to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in San Diego this year with a wire-to-wire win over San Deigo State, 76-68. They built their lead early on three-pointers and sustained the win on the back of late free throws when they counted the most.
For the second game in a row, the Lancers started hot. CBU opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter. Point guard Nhug Bosch Duran paced the Lancers in that opening frame going 3-3 from beyond the arc for all nine of her first-quarter points. Returning guard Chloe Webb was also strong in the initial period, scoring eight points with a pair of three-pointers and half a dozen rebounds in eight minutes of action. It was more of the same in the second quarter as CBU extended its lead to 16 midway through but went into the halftime break with the same 11-point lead they had at the end of the first.
The Lancers built and kept that lead on the back of fantastic 8-17 (47.1%) shooting from distance, but the Aztecs adjusted at halftime to hold CBU to just 1-8 (12.5%) in the second half. This allowed the Aztecs to creep back into the game, winning the third quarter 24-19 and getting within two points with three minutes to go in the fourth. Chloe Webb, a San Diego native, took over in the second half for the Lancers, scoring 12 of her game-high 20, including going 8-8 from the free throw line to help ice it down the line. While Webb did much of the heavy lifting, Kinsley Barrington all but sealed it with a timely three-pointer with just 30 seconds left that gave CBU a 74-67 lead.
In all, four Lancers broke double-digits on Friday night. Webb's 20-piece led them, with Bosch Duran and Grace Schmidt not far behind with 16 each. Anaiyah Tu'ua poured in 10 to go with a game-high six assists.
CBU will finally play their home opener on Wednesday, November 15, at 6:00 p.m. against Long Beach State.
