RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team finished out the regular season with a three-set defeat at the hands of the reigning Western Athletic Conference Champion Jacks of Stephen F. Austin.
The Jacks clinched the regular season title last week with a win over Grand Canyon and completed an undefeated conference schedule over CBU. The Lancers will enter the tournament 14-13 overall and 7-9 in conference play. The 14 wins are tied for the second-most in the WAc era for CBU and equal their conference win total from last season.
The Lancers have qualified for the WAC Tournament in back-to-back seasons in the two seasons they have been eligible. CBU enjoyed its most successful non-conference record of the DI era and its longest win streak during the time period, with an eight-match streak in September.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Jacks and Lancers traded scoring runs in the opening period; however, a 12-2 SFA run put the set out of reach for CBU, and the Jacks prevailed 25-20.
The Jacks came out flying in the second set and quickly gained an 8-3 advantage over the home team. CBU responded and mounted an 8-2 run to keep the score tight at 18-15. SFA distanced itself again with another scoring run and would end up with the 25-22 result.
CBU turned up its intensity in the third set and jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind back-to-back service aces by Maddie Brown. SFA and CBU would trade points before the Jacks registered a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the set. CBU would battle right back and tie the match at 17 apiece; however, the Jacks would finish off the LAncers 25-22 to earn the sweep.
STATISTICAL NOTABLES:
Michalina Rola led the Lancers as she had most of the season in kills with 14 and chipped in six digs. Posada continued an impressive stretch with another double-digit kills performance, posting ten on a .450 hitting percentage.
Reese Reed produced another double-double with 13 assists and 12 digs, while her teammate Maddie Brown posted 18 assists to lead the team and added nine digs.
NEXT: The Lancers will await their seeding before heading to the WAC Tournament in Orem, Utah beginning on Thursday, November 16.
