RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball prevailed on Saturday afternoon, defeating Cal State Fullerton 73-68 in the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. The Lancers move to 9-0 on the year and claim a win over the Titans for the first time in program history.
Filipa Barros paced CBU in a game where four Lancers scored in double-figures. The second-year guard put up a season-high 19 points after hitting a career-high five three-pointers. She didn't settle for scoring on Saturday, adding a team-high seven rebounds, a block, and a steal to cap her best game of the season.
The game started with dueling runs as CBU opened the contest on a 4-0 streak before Fullerton rebutted with nine straight, and the Lancers answered with six in a row. The Titans ended the frame with a 15-13 lead as they connected on a fast break layup at the horn.
A back-and-forth second quarter eventually favored CBU after the teams traded baskets for the first four minutes. After that, the Lancers outscored Fullerton 21-6 over the final 6:27 of the period to go into halftime up 41-29.
The Lancers continued their hot shooting in the third, leading by double-digits the whole quarter and by as many as 17 before. The Titans made a run in the fourth, though, cutting the difference to two with less than four minutes to play. CBU would be successful in keeping the lead throughout the game's final moments, but never comfortably, going between a three and five-point lead until the final buzzer went off.
Although Chloe Webb would have her 20+ point streak snapped, she was still a significant contributor, scoring 15 points with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Grace Schmidt returned to her standard form, pouring in 15 points on 7-12 shooting and five rebounds. Nhug Bosch Duran posted a full line as well, with 11 points, six boards, and a pair of steals in just 20 minutes of work.
The Lancers are on the road for the remainder of the 2023 schedule, heading to the South to take on a pair of first-time opponents in Louisiana Tech and Texas Southern. The Lancers will face the Bulldogs on Monday, December 18, at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time.
