LAS CRUCES--- The California Baptist women's basketball team extended their win streak to four games with a gritty 73-65 road win over the New Mexico State Aggies. The win avenged a one-point loss the Lancers suffered at the hands of the Aggies on February second in Riverside.
CBU is now 11-4 in Western Athletic Conference games and firmly in third place in the standings. The Aggies will drop to 8-7 in WAC play, and both teams have already punched their tickets to WAC Vegas in March. CBU has now won seven straight conference road games, the longest active streak in the WAC.
The first half was a defensive battle as both teams held each other below 35% shooting from the field. The Aggies began the game on a 12-2 run before CBY responded with a 16-2 spurt to take the lead. The Aggies would end up with the lead at the half, 28-26. Chloe Webb gave the Lancers great minutes off the bench with Trinity San Antonio in foul trouble. Webb had six points, six rebounds, and three assists in twelve minutes of play.
After trailing by two at the half, the Lancers took control in the third quarter, and a Sila Finau triple with under five seconds to go gave CBU a four-point advantage heading into the final frame. The last period was back-and-forth until the Lancers took control for good courtesy of two clutch plays. San Antonio buried a three off a Finau pass with 2:49 to go, and then Finau converted an and-1 opportunity with 1:55 to go to put the game out of reach.
Finau scored a career-high 22 points with six rebounds and five assists. Four other Lancers scored in double figures, including Grace Schmidt (11 pts), Webb (13 pts), San Antonio (14 pts), and Brittany Klaman (11 pts).
The Lancers held a 20-point advantage in fastbreak points as a team and scored 22 points off of turnovers. CBU outscored the Aggies by 18 from the perimeter and overcame an early double-digit deficit in the victory.
Next, the Lancers will head back to Riverside for a critical home contest against the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Saturday, February 25th, at 1 p.m.
