CEDAR CITY, UTAH – A high-scoring affair in Utah was a four-point game late. However, the California Baptist University women's basketball rally would fall just short in Cedar City, and Southern Utah University took the victory by a score of 83-75. The Lancers move to 16-12 on the year, and 12-5 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Trinity San Antonio led the Lancers with 17 points while shooting at a 50% clip from the field. Sila Finau and Chloe Webb each dropped a dozen with nine and five rebounds, respectively. Kinsley Barrington was the final Lancer in double figures, pouring in 11 with eight coming in the second half to help spark the late offensive push.
The first quarter was a tight, back-and-forth affair as the Lancer led 16-15 with a little over three minutes to go. The Thunderbirds would close out on a 7-2 run to hold a four-point advantage after 10 minutes.
SUU would expand on that lead in the second quarter, taking a 42-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. The double-digit deficit was primarily achieved as the Thunderbirds shot 54.8% in the first half, centering around a 6-5 and 6-3 frontcourt that went 10-12 in the first 20 minutes of action.
SUU would push it to a 15-point lead after three quarters, but momentum would shift in the fourth quarter as the Lancers began the final frame on a 13-2 run. Filipa Barros and Kinsley Barrington would each hit a three-pointer, and a layup, plus a Sila Finau free throw and layup would cut the Thunderbird lead to just six.
It remained close until the end, with the Lancers trailing by just four points with 96 seconds to go. Trinity San Antonio picked up the Lancers late, scoring the final six points for CBU, but the Thunderbirds would continue to sink free throws as time ran down.
The Lancers will close out the regular season at home on Thursday night against The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at 6:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, CBU will honor its five departing seniors with a brief ceremony on the court.
