RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's basketball hosted Sam Houston for the first time on Saturday, playing out an exciting back-and-forth game that the Bearkats would ultimately claim, 66-62.
Three Lancers finished the day in double figures, led by Sila Finau, who led CBU with 16 points and nearly notched a double-double with nine rebounds. Brittany Klaman and Grace Schmidt both added an even dozen to the score line, with Klaman adding a game-high six assists.
The game started very slow, as the first quarter ended with a score of 8-4 in favor of the Lancers. They would hang on to most of that lead and go into halftime with a 22-19 advantage. Both teams found their rhythm in the third, combining for 50 points to get the game back on track. The Bearkats used a slight three-point and free throw advantage in the fourth quarter to take the lead and the win.
The Lancers move to 11-11 on the year with a 7-4 mark in the Western Athletic Conference, while SHSU improves to 11-10 overall with a matching 7-4 mark in WAC play. CBU is back on the road next week with another Texas trip, taking on Abilene Christian and Tarleton State on February 9th and 11th at 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. Pacific time, respectively.
