Lancers Fall in Midweek Slugfest against Dirtbags

RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist returned home for a midweek tilt against the Long Beach Dirtbags, where they fell 8-6 in a ten-inning ball game. The Lancers move 8-8 on the season.

The Lancers got going early with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first from Michael Carpentier, tallying his third of the season. The Dirtbags responded with a two-run shot over the fence of their own in the top of the second. Entering the bottom of the third, Mitchel Simon delivered the third two-run home run of the game and put California Baptist ahead 4-2.

In the fourth inning, CBU loaded the bases with three walks from the Dirtbags. Julian Alvarez collected a fielder's choice RBI after Long Beach retired the runner at second and Ostrander scored. The Dirtbags chipped into the Lancer's lead with a single home run in the top of the fifth, putting CBU ahead by two.

The Dirtbags continued to challenge the Lancer's defense, putting up another run on the board in the fifth inning with another single home run but California Baptist fought back with a single up the middle from Alvarez as Ostrander scored. Long Beach hit the fourth home run of the night and scored another run off a crushed ball off the center field wall in the top of the seventh, tallying two more runs and narrowing CBU's lead to one.

Long Beach ultimately tied the game in the top of the eighth inning with a single home run, and after a scoreless ninth inning, the midweek match-up was forced to the tenth inning. Dirtbags hit the final two-run home run of the night and threw a three-up, three-down bottom of the tenth to finish the game.

Between the Lancers and Dirtbags, a total of 13 pitchers saw action on the mound. The squads also put a total of six home runs in the books during the night game. Alvarez lead the hitting with two hits and two RBI. Simon improves to a ten-game hitting streak after hitting his third home run of the season for the Lancers.

California Baptist returns to Texas to take on Stephen F. Austin in a three-game conference series this weekend, with games Friday through Sunday.
