Lancers Top Lumberjacks in Series Opener

NACOGDOCHES--- California Baptist traveled to Texas for their second WAC series against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and came up big with a decisive 10-1 win. The Lancers improve to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Mitchel Simon had himself a day on the diamond, clocking in a two-run home run during his first at-bat against SFA. In the second inning, Julian Alvarez advanced the runner home with a single and Simon came up big again with a double that tallied another two runs for the Lancers.

In the fourth inning, Alvarez got on base with another single and Simon followed off of a fielder's choice from the 'Jacks. Michael Carpentier loaded the bases after a single of his own and a Jake Skipworth single would bring home two more runs to bring the Lancer's lead 7-0. Josh Paino would also get in the books with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that scored Garret Ostrander.

With an eight-run lead by CBU, the Lumberjacks managed to put one run on the board in the sixth inning but lost their momentum with a throw from right-fielder Dustin Garcia to catcher Carpentier to end the inning. California Baptist added two more runs to their lead in the top of the seventh with a double from Garcia and a single from Alvarez. Right-handed pitcher Luis Becerra helped secure the 10-1 lead with a solid three innings from the mound.

The Lancer's pitching staff had a dominating day against SFA. Liam Rocha collected six strikeouts and only allowed five hits during his six innings. Becerra entered in the seventh inning and made quick work of the Lumberjack's batters, throwing three strikeouts in his first inning. Rocha walked away with this third win of the season, improving to 3-0, and Becerra earned the save for his efficient three innings of action.

Simon ended the night with a stellar four hits, four RBI, a double, and a home run. Close behind was Alvarez, who had four hits and two RBI on the night. Skipworth also collected two RBI and two hits during his at-bats for the Lancers.

The Lancers are back out in Nacogdoches, Texas for the second game of the WAC series tomorrow at 12 p.m. PST against the Lumberjacks.
