MINNEAPOLIS, MN – On Friday, Remi Fabiani and Gael Jimenez became the first swim and dive student-athletes to represent California Baptist University in the NCAA National Championships. Fabiani opened the competition with the fastest race of the meet, the 50-yard freestyle, while Jimenez began competition on the 1-meter springboard.
Fabiani was first to jump in on Friday morning. The sophomore from Luxembourg was challenged with a placement in the fastest preliminary heat in the event based on his qualifying time of 19.09 from the WAC Championships. Fabiani was slotted in the seven-lane, directly adjacent to LSU's reigning NCAA Champion, Brooks Curry. Fabiani would turn and touch in a time of 19.24 to close out day one in 25th place out of 53 participants. He did secure the title of top-WAC qualifier, besting Wen Zhang from Air Force, who finished in 52nd place in a time of 19.99.
Jimenez is slated to participate in all three diving events this weekend, beginning with the 1-meter springboard prelims on Friday morning. In an expectedly loaded field that went 50 competitors deep, Jimenez got stronger as the event went on, ultimately finishing in 34th place with a score of 311.90.
The duo will return to the pool Saturday morning for prelims at 8 a.m. Pacific on ESPN+. Fabiani will take on the 100-yard backstroke field while Jimenez moves to the 3-meter springboard event.
