
CBU Opens 2023 at the Santa Clara Tournament

SANTA CLARA/SAN JOSE--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball opened their season with two matches on Friday in the Santa Clara/San Jose Invitational. In the early game, the Lancers lost a tightly contested battle with the Jacksonville Dolphins in extra sets and then fell to the Santa Clara Broncos 3-1 in the matinee.
CBU vs Jacksonville:
In the opening set, CBU started strong, building an early 12-6 advantage over the Dolphins. Jacksonville would respond with a late run to force two CBU timeouts and ultimately take the opening set 25-23. Michalina Rola led the Lancers in the opening frame with four kills, while Catherine Krieger and Laura Walewska would add three of their own.
The Lancers won the second and third sets 25-17 and 25-18, respectively, to take the 2-1 advantage. The Dolphins responded with a fourth-set victory to force extra sets. In extra sets, Jacksonville started fast with a 6-2 early advantage and would hold onto their lead to pick up the win 15-8 and take the match.
The Lancers were led in kills by Rola, who registered 15 and added 13 digs to make it a double-double for her in the opener. Nicole Mauser, a freshman, made the most of her first game in Lancer gear with nine kills and three blocks in her debut. Mauser started the match at opposite hitter and finished second on the team in blocks.
Laura Walewska contributed a solid performance to kick off her season with seven kills and five blocks on a .583 attack percentage. Walewska led the team and the match in both blocks and attack percentage. Setters Leah Pease and Reese Reed combined for 43 assists in the five sets, with Reed posting a double-double off the bench with 18 assists and 12 digs.

CBU vs Santa Clara:
After a tight loss in the opener, CBU responded in the second match of the evening with a 3-1 victory over Santa Clara.
The match was thrilling from the jump, with an early overtime that resulted in a 30-28 set win for the Broncos. The Lancers fell behind early in that opening frame but climbed back to force the extra points. Mia Jerue contributed four service aces in the frame, while three Lancers had three kills to pace the offense.
CBU bounced back quickly with a 25-20 set two win led by a balanced offense and efficient serving. Set three needed extra points to be decided, with the Broncos again coming away with the set. This time, the outcome was 28-26 to give Santa Clara the 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Lancers held a sizable lead in the fourth set until a 16-3 Bronco run ended the set and the match. Michalina Rola led the Lancers for the second game in kills with 13 and notched another double-double by adding 14 digs in the competition.
One bright side for CBU in the loss was an NCAA-era record 14 service aces in the match. The record was aided by Mia Jerue, who had six of the aces, while Rola and Reese Reed each chipped in three.
The Lancers will square off with the Matadors of Cal State Northridge on Saturday, August 26th, at 2 p.m. at Spartan Gym to conclude the tournament.
