LOS ANGELES - The California Baptist University divers took on some of the best divers in the West this weekend at the Trojan Diving Invitational hosted by USC. Audrey Thordarson-Wehner and Mario Del Valle highlighted the LA weekend with performances that earned their final spots in the NCAA Zone E Qualifiers.
MEN'S RESULTS
The Lancers got things started on Friday afternoon, where Gael Jimenez and Del Valle finished second and third in the men's 3-meter competition. Jimenez was the only diver to surpass the 400-point mark in the prelims, and his qualifying total of 434.15 set a new CBU program record in the event.
Del Valle would follow up Friday's action with the Lancers' only outright win of the weekend, claiming the men's platform crown with a total point mark of 744.30, over 100 points ahead of USC's second-place finisher. Sunday's Lancer top-finisher was Jimenez again, posting a score of 728.15 in the men's 1-meter competition, with Del Valle finishing fourth.
Junior John Angelovic was the only other male diver to make the trip to the Uytengsu Aquatics Center, where he peaked on Saturday with a fourth-place finish on platform with his score of 575.75.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
In an immensely deep women's side, Thordarson-Wehner was the only Lancer to earn a podium spot, doing so in Sunday's platform event. Her finals score of 233.30 was strong enough to earn her third and final Zone E Qualifier mark. She was CBU's highest-finishing woman in all three events, placing seventh in the 3-meter and ninth in the 1-meter.
Freshman Jade Fontenelle participated in all three events but posted her best finish in the platform competition, finishing eighth with a score of 372.65. Bella Reynolds also made the trip to LA, finishing in ninth place in the platform event for her best placement of the weekend. Finally, even though Audrey Easter did well on the tower as her other teammates did first, her best finish came on Saturday in the 3-meter competition, where she posted a score of 452.40 to take ninth place.
The Lancer divers will be back in action on December 7th at the Riverside Collegiate Diving Invite, hosted by RCC. Competition starts at 10 a.m.
