RIVERSIDE - Saturday was a cliche sunny Southern California day with no clouds in sight, but it was raining threes in the Fowler Events Center as California Baptist women's basketball matched the Division I era record for most threes in a game. The Lancers cruised to a 97-64 win over the Texans with a significant boost from hitting 20 treys.
Chloe Webb led all scorers with 20, going 7-10 from the field but contributing just one of those record 20 three-pointers. Kinsley Barrington was on Webb's heels with 19 points, three triples, and seven rebounds. Nhug Bosch Duran and Nae Nae Calhoun each posted 18 points games and combined to go 11-19 from distance. All of Duran's points came from beyond the arc, and Calhoun went 5-9 from distance with an and-one to reach her point total. Though she didn't quite hit the double-digit point mark, Filipa Barros had a highlight reel game herself. She scored nine with 12 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals, all of which were game-high marks.
The first quarter was tighter than the final score would imply as the teams finished the opening ten minutes tied at 18. The Texans outshot the Lancers in the opening frame, but a three-point lead with 2:26 left in the first would be the last time Tarleton would be within reach. They would tie the game one more time early in the second quarter, but CBU would immediately answer with an 11-2 run, and the floodgates were officially open after that. CBU would build a 15-point lead by halftime, as Webb already had 17 points at the break.
The early dagger came about halfway through the third quarter as CBU converted a seven-point possession to take a 23-point lead. The scenario began when Barrington was fouled in the act of shooting, earning the first two free throws. A Texan player would receive a technical shortly after arguing the call, resulting in another pair of freebies and possession for the Lancers. Barrington drained her two foul shots and got the green light to take the technical free throws, converting them both. The possession after that resulted in a clean look for Duran, who buried her final basket of the day to cap the fruitful possession.
CBU would eventually build a 35-point lead in the fourth quarter, winning by a season-high 33 points. In two games against the Texans this season, CBU has accumulated won by an average spread of 31.5 points, the highest in a single-season series against an opponent since defeating New Mexico State by an average of 33 in the 2020-21 season.
The Lancers are back on the road next week, taking on Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Thursday night at 4:30 p.m. Pacific time, before heading to Edinburg to take on UTRGV at noon Pacific time on Saturday.
