EDINBURG, TEXAS - The California Baptist University men's and women's swim & dive teams continued one of their strongest DI postseason runs on Friday, with the men remaining in second place overall with 489 points, while the women sit in fifth with 277. For the men, UNLV has pulled away with 681 points, but the Lancers will be in for a fight during Saturday's finale as Grand Canyon sits just 15 points behind the Lancers in third place. Northern Arizona looks to have things wrapped up in the women's competition with 572.5 points, with NM State nearly 200 points behind. CBU trails Northern Colorado by 38 points for fourth place while still defending against a close competitor in Idaho, who trails CBU by only 15.5 points.
This has been a record-setting event for CBU. Friday was no different as Sofia Maksimova, Mario Del Valle, and Tyler Mansheim all etched their names into the history books this evening. Del Valle set a record on the Platform on the morning of 412.30 but destroyed that mark again in the finals, posting a CBU and WAC record score of 473.40. Maksimova and Mansheim each claimed new program records as Maksimova earned her third gold medal in the 100 butterfly while touching in 52.54, and Mansheim secured a bronze medal in the 100 fly with a CBU record time of 47.17.
The CBU women's 400 medley relay kept a weekend streak alive of CBU women placing, completing the course in 3:42.35. When the wake settled at the end of the day, 14 CBU swimmers collected All-WAC awards by placing in the top eight of their respective A Final, only the top three teams are All-WAC for relay events. The men's diving squad saw three places on All-WAC in the end, including last year's defending champion and teammate Gael Jimenez, runner-up today with a score of 343.20, and John Angelovic, sixth with 303.55 points. The individual women, one relay team, and Sofia did most of the heavy lifting for the win, as well as being on the bronze medal-winning relay team.
