ARLINGTON - The Western Athletic Conference announced the results of the WAC Championship coaches poll today, naming a trio of first-year Lancers as award winners. Mario Del Valle earned double acclaim after being named the Men's Freshman and Diver of the Year, Sofia Maksimova earned Women's Swimmer of the Year, and Miranda King received Men's Diving Coach of the Year.
Del Valle earned two golds and a silver in Edinburg last week, helping CBU claim its third sweep of the WAC men's diving events in the past three years. Both of his top-podium finishes were record performances, setting new WAC records in the platform event at 473.4 points and the 1-meter event with a score of 408.20.
Sofia's Women's Swimmer of the Year honor comes on the heels of a pair of individual gold medals in Texas in the 100 fly and 50 free, a third gold as part of the winning 200 free relay team, and a WAC record time in the 100 free as the lead leg of the 400 free relay.
King, a former Lancer diver herself, took over the role of Head Diving Coach this year, leading CBU to its third sweep of the WAC men's diving events in the past four years. King coached Del Valle to his pair of golds and record performances on the platform and 1-meter events and guided Gael Jimenez to the opening day win on the 3-meter board, breaking his own WAC record and setting the new mark at 404.35 points.
