GLENDORA--- At one of the largest and most prestigious outdoor events of the regular season, the California Baptist University track team competed in several events over three days at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
DAY 1:
Only two Lancers competed on day one of the Bryan Clay Invitational, with Greta Karinauskaite running in the 3000M Steeplechase and Massimiliano Berti running in the 10K.
This was Karinauskaite's first steeplechase event of the season after a dominant showing a season ago when she brought home the silver medal in Austin at Nationals and was a First Team All-American. Karinauskiate competed in a loaded field that included multiple All-Americans and a few professional runners. Among the All-Americans in the field were Lexy Halladay-Lowry from BYU, who placed 8th at Nationals in the steeple; Elise Thorner from Florida, who is a 3x First Team All-American; and Gracie Hyde from Adams State, who holds the DII record in the 3000M.
In the loaded field, Greta finished 6th and ran her fourth fastest time ever at 9:37.31. The time was also nine seconds faster than her time from last year's Invitational and was seven seconds off of a podium finish.
Berti concluded the evening for CBU by competing in the Men's 10,000 M. Berti ran strong and collected a new personal best time of 29:38.17 and finished 10th in his heat. The new PB was four seconds faster than his previous best outdoor time that he set at the Ben Brown Invitational last year.
DAY 2:
Six athletes competed on the second of the Bryan Clay Invitational, including five competing in the 5K and one in the 800M. For the men, Roman Zozulia, Matias Reynaga, and Joaquin Campos competed for CBU, with Reynaga finishing at 14:11.5, Campos clocking in at 13:56.34, and Zozulia crossing the line at 14:40.35. The 5K was the first of Campos's career with the Lancer and will stand as his personal best after his 12th-place finish.
On the women's side, Yasna Petrova and Carlota Rodes ran for the Lancers. Petrova ran first and clocked in at 15:57.40, which was 12 seconds off of her personal best and 15 seconds faster than her time from last season's invitational. Rodes concluded the evening for the Lancers and finished the heat at 16:34.44, which was 11 seconds off of a new personal record that she set at the West Coast Relays.
DAY 3:
The final day for the Lancers at the Bryan Clay Invitational was highlighted by two events: the 4x4 and the 1,500 M. The 1.5K's were the highlight of the evening for CBU, with eight athletes competing over multiple heats.
Matej Hrebacka stole the show for CBU in the event, registering a podium finish in the Men's 1.5K Open. Hrebacka placed third at 3:53.29, finishing 0.35 behind first place in the heat. This was Hrebacka's second official event for the Lancers in his freshman season and was the best finish of the weekend for CBU.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the track next week as they compete at the Mt. SAC Relays starting on Thursday, April 18.
