RIVERSIDE--- A three-game scoring slump ended on Thursday evening for the California Baptist women's soccer team after the Lancers took down San Jose State 3-0. The trio of goals came in the first 45 minutes for CBU, and a clean sheet in the second half secured a 2-3 overall record for the Lancers, while the Spartans dropped to 0-3-2 on the season.
California Baptist came out shooting from the very start of the match, beginning with Ava Westlund drawing a penalty kick in the first minute. While the Lancers were unable to convert, Kaylee Hauck would put CBU on the board just five minutes later after Bella Lister's punt carried over a defender for a one-on-one situation for the forward. Hauck slotted the ball into the back of the net with ease for her first goal of the season and the Lancer's first goal in three matches.
Westlund followed suit just four minutes later after Natalia Castro found the forward for another one-on-one situation. A corner kick opportunity proved to be fruitful for the Lancers after Morgan Witz dished a perfect ball across the box that Jana Heinen passed to Jayden Ramirez for screamer into the Spartan's net.
CBU outshot the SJSU 28-4, with the Lancers hitting the ball on frame ten times through 90 minutes and the Spartans finding just one. Hauck totaled four shots on frame across 55 minutes of action, while both Ramirez and Westlund put the ball between the posts twice. Lister picked up her second clean sheet of the season after tallying just one save against the Spartans. The win marks the first team the women's soccer team has beaten San Jose State in program history after the squads tied 0-0 in Northern California last season.
"I'm really proud of the team's response this week in training and that was evident in our execution and performance in tonight's match," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We've been talking about consistency and we certainly showed that tonight with a strong 90 minute performance on both sides of the ball. Our attack was dynamic; Kaylee, Ava and Jayden did a great job finishing their opportunities. Defensively our back four did well to break up any potential threats from our opponent. We'll enjoy the result tonight and get back to work tomorrow preparing for our Sunday opponent".
The Lancers will now turn their attention to another road match on Sunday afternoon as they head to La Jolla, California, to face UC San Diego at 4 p.m. in Triton Soccer Stadium. Lancer soccer tickets are on sale now HERE for all games at CBU Soccer Stadium.
