CBU Bests UCR in Crosstown Showdown on Thursday Evening

RIVERSIDE--- The battle for Riverside was victorious for California Baptist women's soccer on Thursday evening after the Lancers bested UC Riverside 1-0. CBU improves to 4-3-1 on the season, while UCR drops to 2-5 on the year.

Head Coach Kristen St. Clair's squad came out on the attack from the start of the match, driving straight through the Highlander's backline multiple times. The CBU offense totaled 11 shots on frame, and a deep look from Mia Scranton with 15 minutes to go in the first half sailed over the UCR keeper, hitting the top post, and nearly went in for the Lancer lead. Ava Westlund ultimately found the back of the net in the 42nd minute with a left-footed shot that sailed into the back of the net for the lone goal of the match.

The Highlanders spent the next 45 minutes going at CBU's defense, who held their crosstown rivals to just six shots on frame that paired with six saves for Mikayla O'Brien. The competitive match saw moments of chippiness through the entirety of the 90 minutes, with both teams combining for 20 fouls. Both squads were issued a pair of yellows in the final ten minutes of the evening for unsporting behavior.

"I am really proud of our team performance and execution tonight," remarked St. Clair. "Rivalry games are always challenging, but I thought our focus and execution was good on both sides of the ball tonight. Morgan played a great ball to Ava for the game-winner. We created numerous scoring opportunities but credit their goalkeeper for coming up with big saves to keep the game at 1-0. I am proud of our team's performance. We'll enjoy this tonight and begin prepping for our next opponent tomorrow."

The Lancers will now turn their attention to an away match in the Pacific Northwest as CBU faces Portland for the first time in program history on Saturday, September 21st, at 7:00 p.m.
