RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball dropped a heartbreaker to Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon by a score of 64-63. The Lancers fall to 3-3 in conference play on the year with a three-game road trip on the horizon.
Claudia Fiel matched her career-high of 18 points on Saturday while also nabbing a game-high four steals. Khloe Lemon added a dozen points to the stat sheet, split evenly between the two halves with nine rebounds. Anaiyah Tu'ua showed continued improvement since returning from the injured list to add 13 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
Despite trailing by four points at the end of the first quarter, CBU bounced back to take a 35-32 lead into halftime. They added to their lead with a +7 third quarter and started the fourth quarter with a 10-point advantage.
The Lancers kept that same advantage until the 2:37 mark when SUU began their comeback push. The Thunderbirds would go on a 12-1 run to close out the contest, securing the win with a last-second layup by the games leading scorer, Daylani Ballena.
The Lancers will look to right the ship on the road, starting with a trip to Texas next Thursday to take on the Wildcats of Abilene Christian. Tipoff for that game is set for 4:00 p.m. Pacific time.
