RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will have its first road test of the season on Saturday as it travels up north to Stockton, California, to take on the Tigers of the University of Pacific.
The Lancers are coming off an opening thriller against their crosstown rival, UC Riverside, on opening night, where they defeated the Highlanders 56-53 for a 1-0 start. The Lancers got impressive performances from the trio of Filipa Barros, Chance Bucher, and Emma Johansson in the victory to help lead them to the comeback win.
The Tigers also come into the matchup 1-0 after downing UC San Diego at home 69-66, led by a solid shooting percentage from the perimeter (12-28). Pacific finished last season 15-19 but made a late-season run that resulted in a WNIT berth, where they would ultimately fall to New Mexico State. The Tigers were picked to finish 8th in the loaded West Coast Conference and are led by 11th-year Head Coach Bradley Davis, who just became the program's all-time wins leader on Monday night. Coach Davis returns eight to his roster from a season ago, but did lose his top three scorers from the 2024-25 campaign.
This will be the first-ever matchup between the Lancers and Pacific, making it one of the few California DI programs CBU has yet to face. The Lancers will also face another WCC school later in the season when they head up to Malibu to take on Pepperdine on Wednesday, December 3.
For the Lancers, its rebounding was the storyline of the opening night win over UC Riverside, collecting 60, which is the most against a DI opponent in program history. The major catalysts behind that were the individual performances of Barros and Johansson, who combined for 38 of those rebounds. Johansson had the 2nd most in the NCAA over the opening games with 20, while Barros tied for third with 18. Johansson would also lead the NCAA in single-game blocks with seven while adding ten points. Chance Bucher, in her CBU debut, would lead the way in scoring with 22 points, connecting on four triples to help guide the Lancers to victory.
