CBU Sweeps Southern Utah on Senior Night in Riverside

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team got back in the win column on Thursday night as they swept Southern Utah at home on Senior Night.
The win is the third of the conference schedule for the Lancers, while the Thunderbirds drop to 1-9 in the Western Athletic Conference standings. CBU is now a half-game behind UT Arlington and one game back of Abilene Christian as the conference tournament nears.
After the pregame senior festivities, CBU was dialed in from the opening serve as they would open up a 13-7 lead on the Thunderbirds. Southern Utah battled back to tie the match at 16 apiece, but that would be as far as the Lancers allowed it to go. CBU would close on a 9-3 run to take the opening set 25-19, ending on a Reese Reed service ace. The Lancers jumped all over the Thunderbirds in the second set as well, never allowing Southern Utah to take a lead or even tie the match. CBU's lead grew to as many as 11 before they would close out the frame 25-17.
The third set was by far the most competitive of the evening, with Southern Utah taking an early advantage and eventually leading by as many as four points. A late 5-1 run by the Lancers would flip the momentum back in favor of the home team, where it would stay for the duration of the match. SUU would get within two points at 22-20, but kills from Lucy Ryan and Emery Dejong would end the set and the match to secure the home sweep for CBU.
Emery Dejong continued her strong play over the past few weeks with a game-high 14 kills and would make it a double-double with 11 digs. Reese Reed had her best performance of the season as the starting setter, recording a season-high and career-best 31 assists in the three-set victory. She also added two blocks, seven digs, and a pair of aces. Gianna Perez would lead the team in digs with 14 and recorded a pair of aces to boot.
NEXT: The Lancers will close out its home schedule this Saturday at 1 PM against Utah Tech.
