RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will finalize its non-conference schedule this week as it travels to Denver and Nebraska. The Lancers are looking to end a four-game slide as they currently sit at 6-5.
The week will begin with a trip to Colorado to visit the University of Denver on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers are currently 4-7 and are coming off a tough road loss at Kansas. This will be the first-ever matchup against Denver for CBU and will be just the second-ever matchup against a Summit League opponent for CBU. The last time the Lancers faced a Summit League team was in the WBI in 2023, when they defeated North Dakota en route to the WBI Championship. Denver is led in scoring by sophomore guard Coryn Watts, who is in the top 35 in the NCAA in points (209) and points per game (19.0) this season.
The second matchup of the weekend will be against #23 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers are one of 12 unbeaten teams this season, at 11-0, and are ranked #12 in the NET Rankings as of this writing. Nebraska has posted solid wins over Penn State, Virginia, and in-state rival Creighton while scoring at least 80 points in every single game this season. The Cornhuskers, led by 10th-year Head Coach Amy Williams, are top ten in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio, assists, bench points, field goal percentage, and scoring. For CBU, it will be the sixth time in program history they will face a ranked opponent, with the last time occurring last year when they faced #6 USC on the road.
The Lancers will look to continue leaning on their strong defense as they close out non-conference play strongly. CBU still boasts a defense that ranks 15th in blocks, 31st in field goal percentage defense, and tenth in defensive rebounding. A large part of that has been the exceptional play of senior forward Emma Johansson, who is third in the NCAA in blocks with 33 and fifth in blocks per game with three per contest.
